Deaths of Gilles Mattaini, Ross Warren and John Russell

The demises of Gilles Mattaini, Ross Warren, and John Russell have garnered attention from law enforcement, with police expressing gratitude for three rewards, each amounting to $100,000. These incentives are offered in exchange for information pertaining to the mysterious disappearances and presumed deaths of two individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and the passing of another in the affluent eastern precincts of Sydney during the 1980s.

Gilles Mattaini, a 27-year-old French national residing in the coastal enclave of Bondi, was last observed traversing the scenic coastal pathway at Tamarama on the 15th of September 1985, as witnessed by a neighbor. His absence was not reported until 2002, with subsequent Coroner investigations concluding his demise.

Ross Warren, a 24-year-old news presenter hailing from Wollongong, was last sighted navigating Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, on the 22nd of July 1989, subsequent to a convivial evening with friends. Two days later, his keys were discovered amidst rocks below the cliff edge at Marks Park, Tamarama, and his vehicle was found in close proximity. Despite his body never being recovered, the Coroner pronounced him deceased.

John Russell, aged 31 and employed as a barman in the eastern suburbs, was last witnessed alive in convivial libations with acquaintances at a Bondi hotel on the 23rd of November 1989. The morning after, his lifeless body was discovered at the base of the cliff at Marks Park, Tamarama, exhibiting injuries consistent with a fall from a precipice.

The circumstances surrounding these three incidents have undergone scrutiny by the Homicide Squad’s Unsolved Homicide Team in recent years. Detective Superintendent Michael Willing, the head of the Homicide Squad, remarked that the reviews were prompted by the Coroner's determination that the events were suspicious and potentially linked to crimes fueled by anti-gay sentiments.

Detective Superintendent Willing stated, “We believe there are still individuals in the community privy to the events surrounding these men, and we anticipate that these rewards will serve as an inducement for them to come forth.”

He continued, “Every piece of information provided to us will be diligently pursued. We are resolute in our commitment to resolving these three cases and offering closure to the families affected.”

Addressing the families of Mr. Warren and Mr. Russell, Peter Rolfe, representing the Support After Murder support group, conveyed, “For the past 26 years, the specter of Ross, John, and Giles' deaths has lingered. We suspect that there are witnesses or individuals with information haunted by the knowledge they possess."

“We urge you to avail yourselves of the rewards offered, in the hope that our lingering distress may find resolution and, in some small measure, alleviate the burden you may carry.”

The rewards, totaling up to $100,000 each, are designated for individuals providing information leading to the apprehension and conviction of those responsible for the deaths of Mr. Mattaini, Mr. Warren, and Mr. Russell.
