The murder of Brianna Denison, her brother shares his story

Brighton Denison strolled purposefully to the office of the dean at Reno High School. The specific class eluded Brighton's memory, yet an unmistakable conviction accompanied him down the hallway, asserting the insignificance of school matters. The completion of homework held no relevance; sympathetic gazes were the sole responses received. Embraces from unfamiliar tearful individuals became a customary occurrence.

For everyone, including himself and his mother, Bridgette Zunino Denison, the paramount concern rested on the discovery of his elder sister. A decade ago, the disappearance of Brianna Denison captivated the community.

The 19-year-old college student vanished following an evening spent with friends near the University of Nevada, Reno, on January 20, 2008. In an interview mere days after her disappearance, Brighton expressed, "Whoever has her, I want her back. We cherish her. She is an integral part of our lives, and we yearn for her return."

Brighton, a mere 15 at the time, experienced a profound transformation that day his sister was taken—no longer the carefree high school freshman who enjoyed skateboarding and recently took up playing the guitar.

He assumed the role of the younger brother, occasionally awkward, particularly at memorials and candlelight vigils. Volunteering to craft the blue ribbons that symbolized the Bring Back Bri campaign, visible throughout Northern Nevada, became his way of contributing.

Now, at 25, residing in the vastness of Las Vegas, a city seemingly detached from the tragedy, Brighton acknowledges that his last name often goes unnoticed. A father to a 4-year-old son, he reflects, "It unequivocally altered everything. A normal childhood eluded me thereafter. My mother couldn't bear to let me out of her sight."

The recollection of February 15, 2008, remains vivid for Brighton. Lori Fralick, a victim's advocate with the Reno Police, awaited him in the dean's office.

In the three weeks since Brianna's disappearance, Fralick had frequently picked up Brighton. Devoted to supporting the family, she maintained a special connection with him. Reflecting on her involvement, Fralick shared, "I worked extensively with this family because the perpetrator was still at large." Acting as a shield against the media frenzy outside Brighton's residence, she played a crucial role.

On a particular day, as Fralick and Brighton made their way to her car parked outside, a solemn quiet enveloped them.

Seated in the front, Brighton gazed straight ahead.

Approximately five minutes from his residence, Fralick uttered, "They found her body."
