The discovery of a child's remains in Oklahoma on Tuesday, amidst the quest for the missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield, was announced by state investigators.
These remains were uncovered in the rural expanse of Grady County, just beyond Rush Springs, as disclosed in an afternoon bulletin by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. It's imperative to note that officials refrain from definitively identifying these remains as belonging to Brownfield at present.
"The remains shall be conveyed to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Oklahoma City for definitive identification," asserted the law enforcement entity. "Given the active homicide inquiry, the OSBI abstains from further commentary until the remains are incontrovertibly identified."
The search for the young girl has transitioned into a "recovery operation," with a focus on locating her deceased body, following the emergence of court documents alleging her demise due to severe beatings inflicted by her guardian on Christmas Day.
Ivon Adams, aged 36, stands accused of the murder of Brownfield, purportedly subjecting her to multiple assaults, as per prosecutors cited by The Oklahoman. He is confronted with a first-degree murder charge alongside accusations of child neglect. A court affidavit, as cited by the newspaper, reports Ivon's wife, Alysia Adams, informing an OSBI agent that her spouse savagely assaulted the girl shortly after midnight, holding her aloft by the arms. "Athena displayed no signs of life, with barely discernible eyes," she recounted to the police as per the affidavit. "Subsequently, he laid her upon the ground, delivering at least three additional blows to her chest."
Thereafter, Athena "remained motionless."
Ivon Adams purportedly absconded with the body around 1 a.m. the ensuing day, claiming to have transported her remains to Rush Springs, his former place of residence, as per the affidavit.
He was apprehended last Thursday in Arizona and awaits extradition to Oklahoma. Authorities were alerted to Athena’s disappearance subsequent to a postal worker encountering her 5-year-old sister wandering alone on January 10 near the Adams' residence, where the two girls were under their guardianship.
Alysia Adams, aged 31, was detained and charged with two counts of child neglect. While the OSBI confirmed her relation to the siblings, specifics were withheld. Biological parents of the sisters have been interrogated by authorities and are assisting with the investigation, according to state authorities. Athena’s sister has been placed in protective custody.
The agency reported that the two girls had been under the care of the Adams for nearly two years.
