Shanteari Weems perpetrated the shooting of her spouse. Her husband, a former officer of the Baltimore City police force, faced allegations of engaging in inappropriate conduct with children at the daycare center. The shooting is thought to have arisen from a confrontation between the couple. After discovering a second accusation of misconduct against her husband, Weems proceeded to the Mandarin Hotel to address the issue. This incident unfolded weeks after the closure of their Maryland daycare center by Child Protective Services due to the initial allegation.
According to reports, on July 21, 2022, Shanteari Weems journeyed to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, D.C. with the purpose of meeting her spouse, James Weems Jr. However, the meeting was far from romantic, as Weems purportedly brought two firearms with her. It is believed that she intended to shoot her husband, who stood accused of molesting several children at the Maryland daycare center, resulting in its closure.
As documented by The Baltimore Sun, a fire alarm around 7:30 PM prompted hotel staff to inspect a room on the eighth floor. Upon observing blood splatters on the wall, they promptly contacted law enforcement.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the hotel room door barricaded, with Shanteari Weems shouting from within that she had shot a "child molester." She then threatened self-harm if the police entered.
After an hour-long standoff, police forcibly entered the room when James Weems Jr. began screaming that he had been shot in the leg and head. He was swiftly transported to the hospital with severe injuries.
Subsequent to the incident, Shanteari Weems was apprehended and charged with the intent to commit harm and assault with a dangerous weapon. Nevertheless, she denied any intention to end her husband's life.
During a search of her possessions, the police uncovered a notebook belonging to Weems. As per a 7News report, Weems had written in the notebook about her intention to shoot James Weems Jr., albeit not fatally. She expressed her wish for him to face the consequences of his actions and be perceived by society as a reprehensible individual.
Weems also articulated her desire for justice for the children affected by the alleged abuse, stating, "You gonna pay."
According to Shanteari Weems, the confrontation with her spouse escalated into a heated argument, resulting in her shooting him in self-defense when he advanced towards her. However, it appears that her accusations against her husband did not materialize out of thin air.
As per a representative from the Baltimore County Police, James Weems Jr. faces criminal charges for purportedly engaging in sexual abuse with at least three children while employed at a daycare center.
Weems Jr. is charged with three counts each of sexual abuse involving a minor, third-degree sexual offense, second-degree assault, and fourth-degree sexual offense. Additionally, he faces a charge of displaying sexually obscene material to a minor.
Per his LinkedIn profile, Weems Jr. served as an infantryman in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1983 to 1987 and worked as a police officer with the Baltimore Police Department from 1996 to 2005. He retired from the police force due to medical reasons but continued working with the department as a contractor until 2008. In recent years, he had been employed in private security.
