The Disappearance of Steven Damman

The disappearance of Steven Damman is a tragic and puzzling case that has remained unsolved for many decades. Steven, who vanished on October 31, 1955, from East Meadow, New York, was only two years old at the time. His case is classified as a non-family abduction, and despite various leads and investigations, there has been no trace of him since.

At the time of his disappearance, Steven was undergoing treatment for a kidney growth, adding to the concerns for his well-being. He was last seen at a supermarket in East Meadow, just a block and a half from his home. His mother had briefly left him and his seven-month-old sister outside the store while she shopped for bread. When she returned after approximately ten minutes, both children had disappeared. While Steven's sister was later found in her carriage a few blocks away, there was no sign of Steven.

The case took a distressing turn when, in late November 1955, an individual claiming to be a student at Queens College in New York City sent three letters to Steven's parents, demanding money in exchange for his safe return. However, it was later revealed that this person had no connection to Steven's abduction and was merely an opportunist trying to exploit the situation.

There was speculation that Steven might be the "Boy in the Box," an unidentified young boy found dead in Philadelphia in 1957. However, DNA testing in 2003 conclusively proved that Steven was not the Boy in the Box.

The family, originally from Iowa, faced significant upheaval following Steven's abduction. His father, who was in the Air Force at the time, left the service, and the family returned to Iowa. Steven's parents later divorced in 1957, with both eventually remarrying. His father resides in Iowa, while his mother lives in Missouri.

In 2009, a man named John Barnes from Kalkaska, Michigan, who believed he might be Steven Damman, underwent DNA testing. However, the results indicated that he did not share the same mother as Steven's sister, Pamela Damman Horne.

As of 2023, Steven Damman remains missing, and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain an unsolved mystery. Despite efforts to uncover the truth and various developments over the years, the fate of Steven Damman remains unknown
