Widowed teen mom kills intruder

Sarah McKinley, an 18-year-old widow and mother, gained notoriety in 2011 when she, on New Year's Eve, dispatched an intruder who forcibly entered her dwelling. Engaged in a telephonic conversation with a 911 operator, she sought guidance on whether she could employ lethal force to safeguard herself and her three-month-old progeny.

Requesting authorization to use her firearm if the intruders breached her threshold, the dispatcher refrained from providing explicit consent but emphasized Sarah's imperative to protect her infant. Patiently awaiting the intrusion of knife-wielding assailants, she, with steely resolve, discharged a shotgun, resulting in the instantaneous demise of one intruder.

Residing in a mobile domicile in Blanchard, Oklahoma, Sarah shared her abode with her late husband Kenneth and their offspring Justin. Kenneth succumbed to lung cancer on Christmas Day of the same year, rendering Sarah a widow at the tender age of 18. Describing her departed spouse as her confidant and protector, she expressed profound grief and underscored the necessity of fortitude for her infant son.

On that fateful New Year's Eve, Sarah, accompanied only by her infant, discerned an unfamiliar man at her doorstep. Despite his claim of being a neighbor in need, skepticism enveloped her as she perceived a disconcerting countenance. Refusing him entry, she directed him to leave, prompting his attempt to breach the rear portal with ominous threats.

Equipping herself with a shotgun and pistol, Sarah promptly contacted 911, fortifying her door with furniture while seeking counsel on the permissibility of shooting the intruder. Though instructed to take any necessary measures for self-defense, the dispatcher refrained from explicitly advocating lethal force. The dispatcher assured to remain on the line until law enforcement arrived.

A nerve-wracking 20 minutes elapsed before the intruder breached the door, intensifying Sarah's trepidation. Despite her reluctance to inflict harm, she recognized the imperative to safeguard herself and her offspring, culminating in the decisive discharge of her firearm.

Upon investigation, law enforcement arrived to discover the lifeless intruder, identified as Justin Martin, 24, wielding a knife and possessing a criminal record. Furthermore, an alleged accomplice, Dustin Stewart, 29, was apprehended after fleeing the scene. Stewart, expressing remorse in a subsequent 911 call, divulged their intent to burglarize Sarah's residence in search of prescription drugs.

Police uncovered evidence affirming the premeditated nature of the burglary, indicating the targeting of Sarah's home due to her husband's demise and the presumption of drug possession. Intriguingly, a flower, discovered on Martin's person, perplexed investigators, speculating on its possible intent to mock or elicit sympathy from Sarah.
