On the evening of September 20, 2001, Angela Whalen Hudson's aunt drove to her house near Ruffin, North Carolina. Angie, as she preferred to be called, had invited her over for dinner. Oddly, Angie hadn't responded to any of her aunt's calls that day. Undeterred, her aunt decided to visit at the agreed-upon time, expecting to be welcomed by her niece with an apology. Seeing Angie’s car in the driveway, she assumed Angie was home.
However, when the aunt knocked on the door, Angie did not answer. Instead, her two children greeted her. Curious and concerned, she asked the children if they knew where their mother was. Unfortunately, their response only deepened her worry. The children explained that when they returned from school earlier that day, the house had been empty. The last time they had seen their mother was that morning when she dropped them off at the bus stop. This was alarming, given that Angie’s car was still parked outside.
Feeling increasingly anxious, the aunt decided to search the house for any signs of Angie. Upon entering the kitchen, she noticed something unusual—a half-prepared meal sat on the counter. It was clear that Angie had started cooking but had been interrupted for reasons unknown. The aunt continued to search the house, finding Angie’s purse, jewelry, eyeglasses, and medication—all in their usual places, suggesting that if Angie had left, she hadn’t intended to stay away for long.
The situation was especially concerning given that Angie was in the midst of a contentious separation from her husband, Robert Hudson. September 20th had been the date of her first scheduled meeting with her divorce attorney. Could this meeting have something to do with her sudden disappearance?
Before she vanished, Angie had faced a series of significant challenges. In an interview with The Vanished, her sister Melissa Hopkins described her as a "loving person" who, despite her best efforts, often found herself in unfortunate situations. Angie’s greatest priority was always her children, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. This dedication was tested when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Though overwhelming at first, Angie managed her condition with prescribed medication and entrusted her children to family members whenever her symptoms became too severe.
A few years prior to her disappearance, Angie had moved back to her hometown of Danville, Virginia. However, not everyone in her life stood by her during this period. Her first husband, who struggled with substance abuse, was absent from their children's lives, a situation that Angie tried to shield her children from. Not long after resettling in Danville, she met Robert Hudson, a cabinetmaker and single father. Like Angie, Robert was deeply committed to his children, and the two quickly developed a connection.
Though their relationship seemed like a fresh start, Angie’s family was cautious. Given her history of entering relationships with abusive men, they were always wary when she got involved with someone new. Angie, aware of her family’s concerns, shared only the positive aspects of her relationship with Robert. Nonetheless, the couple grew closer, and Robert eventually proposed. They married in an intimate backyard ceremony where Angie wore a beautiful white gown, her radiant smile reflecting her hopes for the future. After the wedding, Robert persuaded Angie to move with him to Ruffin, where they found a house that seemed perfect for raising a family. It even had a shed for Robert’s cabinet-making work.
Unfortunately, Angie’s new life in Ruffin quickly unraveled. Two years into their marriage, she confided to her family that she wanted a divorce and a restraining order against Robert. She revealed that he "wasn’t the person she thought he was" and had been both physically and emotionally abusive. Even more troubling, Robert blamed Angie’s children for their marital problems. Angie’s family was heartbroken to see her once again trapped in a harmful relationship.
Angie had been documenting Robert’s abuse in a series of journals, which she had shared with her aunt. One particularly disturbing incident involved Robert confiscating all the phones in the house to prevent her from calling for help. To maintain contact with her family, she hid an extra phone in her purse. These journals, to her knowledge, were a secret from Robert. She warned her aunt and sister that if anything ever happened to her, they would need to retrieve the journals.
Despite her fears, Angie was determined to change her situation. She needed to protect herself and her children from Robert, even if it meant going through another divorce.
On August 18, 2001, Angie filed a restraining order against Robert. The initial court proceedings went in her favor. She was granted full custody of her children and allowed to stay in the house until she could afford to move. However, the judge made a perplexing decision: Robert was allowed access to the shed on the property during work hours. This development terrified Angie. What was the point of a restraining order if he could still be near her?
As the family left the courthouse, Robert approached Angie with a menacing threat. He told her she would “be out of the house before the end of the month.” Angie had already arranged to meet with her divorce attorney on September 20th and invited her aunt to join them for dinner that evening. But when the day arrived, Angie disappeared before her aunt could arrive.
Investigators were called to Angie’s home. Her aunt recounted the events, and the first step in the investigation was to establish her last known movements. That morning, her children saw her when she dropped them off at the bus stop. Witnesses confirmed that Angie returned home shortly after. A couple of neighbors even reported seeing Robert walk toward the house soon after Angie arrived. Neither of them was seen leaving the house again.
Robert was questioned, as his presence coincided with his allowed work hours in the shed. He claimed Angie had returned home around 10 a.m. and had briefly spoken to him before leaving on foot, supposedly to meet her lawyer. However, Angie never made it to her appointment.
Melissa informed investigators about Robert’s abusive behavior and his threat at the courthouse, but her concerns were dismissed. When she mentioned Angie’s bipolar disorder, the investigator concluded that she had likely left of her own accord, assuming her condition had played a role in her disappearance.
Despite the family’s protests, no thorough investigation was conducted. The authorities told them they would check Angie’s social security number periodically for any activity. The responsibility of finding out what had happened to Angie now fell on her family.
Days after her disappearance, Melissa and her younger sister went to Angie’s house to collect her belongings, including the journals she had mentioned. However, they were surprised to find Robert’s adult son living in the house. He allowed them inside but stopped them when they approached the deep freezer, stating firmly that none of Angie’s belongings were in there. Robert had also sold Angie’s car shortly after she vanished, raising further suspicion.
As they searched through Angie’s things, they found some of her notebooks. To their dismay, several pages had been torn out.
In a strange twist, one week after Angie disappeared, her best friend called her 15-year-old daughter, claiming that Angie wasn’t missing and that they had spoken earlier that day. The family reported this to the police, but no further action was taken.
As of February 2022, there has been no formal investigation, no suspects, no searches, and no warrants related to Angie’s disappearance. Melissa continues to reach out to the sheriff’s office, but her inquiries are often ignored. She believes that Robert and his family may have been involved, perhaps fearing that Angie would take the house in the divorce, though she had told Melissa she had no intention of doing so.
Even after two decades, Angie’s family continues to seek answers. On the 20th anniversary of her disappearance, Melissa expressed her frustration, stating on Facebook that Robert, who has since passed away, had close ties to the local sheriff’s department, which she believes explains the lack of a proper investigation.
Despite the heartbreak and unanswered questions, Angie’s loved ones refuse to give up. They continue to fight for justice for the vibrant, loving mother who meant so much to them all.
